VADER – 40 YEARS OF WAR AND CHAOS #3

The “Sothis” EP was the next step in Vader’s development, and has already attained cult status. And this doesn’t surprise me at all. The material was entirely premiere this time. Maybe with the exception of „The Wrath”, which is a rearranged version of a track from the demo „Necrolust” (which existed even earlier under the title „Wrath of Satan”). „Sothis” left behind the time of the debut and demos and pushed Vader further, showed what this band was capable of, what potential it had. The material was recorded in March 1994 in the young Modern Sound studio in Gdynia (numbers “Sothis”, “Vision” and the Voice”, “The Warth” and “Black Sabbath”) and partly in Olsztyn’s Świech Studio (instrumental miniatures “Hymn to the Ancient Ones” – with additional incantations by Peter, “De Profundis” and “R’Lyeh”). This EP has a unique feeling for me, probably because of these instrumental compositions between the main tracks. It has an eerie mystical, devilish atmosphere, and at the same time it bursts with aggression. It culminates with a cover of “Black Sabbath” with a guest solo by Grzegorz Skawiński. The band showed once again that they know how to cover the stuff by their idols, and I will say more on the subject with “Future of the Past”. I must admit that this work is probably one of my favourites among the band’s extensive discography. The title track, „Sothis”, is the second one I love so much after „The Final Massacre”.

The time of „Sothis” was also when Vader was getting one foot out of the underground and putting it a more wider metal scene. All kinds of music press and even youth magazines like Popcorn or Bravo wrote about the band. Vader was successful and gained recognition in some circles. During the recording of the material, the line-up also changed. Jackie left and was replaced by Leszek „Shambo” Rakowski, who had previously worked with Vader for almost a year as a technician (among other things, on the famous tour with Ploretaryat). They played their first gig with the new line-up in Poznań in 1994, and then officially at Metalmania on the 10th of April of the same year. They performed at the festival alongside death metal giants such as Unleashed, Cannibal Coprse and Morbid Angel.

„Sothis” was released on CD and cassette in 1994 by Poland’s Baron Records. There were probably as many as four cassette versions – with a sticker on the tape and in three printed versions in different colours. Later, in 1996, the EP was released in the west on CD by Spain’s Repulse Records. In 1998 and 1996 “Sothis” was reissued on CD and cassettes by Metal Mind. This was followed by CD and MC reissues from 2012 to 2015 by the Witching Hour, and in 2022 by Szataniec. And here an vinyl as well. It’s worth noting that the first vinyl release came in 2012, released in a limit of 500 copies by the Italian Night of the Vinyl Dead Records.
